Elaine Longley: A Thank You Note

Dove House Hospice registered nurse, Elaine, has taken the time to address our weekly lottery players with a very special message.

Hello my name is Elaine and I’m a registered nurse here at Dove House Hospice. I’ve said those words hundreds if not thousands of times over the years to my patients and their families and I never tire of saying them. I’m so proud to work here; there really is no place I’d rather be.

I think names are so important in the work of the hospice. Quite often when someone becomes very poorly they feel like they lose their identity to their disease; but not here. Here people can feel at home, have their individual needs cared for and most of all receive care from people that take the time to get to know them.

Whilst I know all the names of my patients I’m afraid I don’t know all the names of you, our kind supporters, who make my job possible. I wish I did so I could thank you personally. I hope you realise what a difference your support makes. All those £1s really add up. I simply wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.

This year I will have worked at the hospice for 25 years, an anniversary I share with the official opening of our inpatient unit by HRH Diana, Princess of Wales. I can remember the day she visited like it was yesterday. She introduced herself as Diana and was so warm and friendly. Her visit gave our patients and our staff and volunteers such a boost.

Since then the hospice has changed dramatically but one thing that hasn’t altered is our ethos. We were developed by the local community, for the local community and that remains true today.

Today my work is very different to how it was when I first started here. We have to contend with so much more regulation and ever decreasing funding. The environment we operate in has never felt more uncertain at a time when more and more seriously ill people need our care.

Your contributions enable us to plan for the future and continue to be there for those who need us and have no other place to turn. It fills me with terror to think there could ever be a day when we weren’t here – I really don’t know what our patients would do and how their families would cope. You can make sure that never happens.

Please do all you can to support this wonderful hospice. I need you and more importantly my patients need you.

Yours sincerely,

If you’d like to join our weekly Lottery to support the vital work of our nurses, you can sign up here. We’re grateful for your continued support.
