Many of you will remember with great fondness our friend and Collector Wilf Sewell, who sadly passed away last month at 96 years old. Our thoughts are very much with Wilf’s friends and family at this sad time.
Wilf had been a Collector for the weekly draw since 1996, only retiring a few months ago. Over the last 20 years Wilf has personally collected over £150,000 in lottery subscriptions for the hospice.
When Wilf’s second wife Dorothy died 14 years ago he took on additional cash rounds to keep him busy and help him cope with his loss. Wilf said:
“It’s the best thing I ever did! Working for the hospice really helped take my mind off losing Dorothy and I met such generous, caring and kind people over the years. Many of them still keep in touch or shout out hello when they see me on my bike.”
Many around Hull and East Yorkshire will recall seeing Wilf on his bike doing his rounds, even traveling all the way out to Bilton to collect from a lottery member on one round.
A lifelong Hull FC supporter, Wilf also collected for the Hull FC lottery for many years, only giving it up in 2013.
The Lottery team are now raising funds to have a leaf engraved in Wilf’s memory on the memory tree in the hospice grounds. If you would like to contribute to this fund please call us on 0300 330 1500.
