Supporting people with mental health and learning disability needs across Devon.

our story

Our charity raises funds to make a difference to the lives of people who use our mental health and learning disability services. It provides a platform which encourages recovery, hope and wellbeing and creates closer links with the community.

Donations enable us to provide above and beyond what the NHS is able to fund. This includes improving the environment, providing equipment, investing in research and services to exceed expectations every day.

The funds you help to raise through taking part in our lottery could go towards a number of great projects to help our incredible staff and the people who use our services. Previous fundraising allowed us to create a sensory gym at Langdon Hospital in Dawlish. The gym provides a low-level stimuli area, which supports our harder to engage patients through activities like stretching groups, injury rehab, Thai Chi and yoga. In Exeter, funds went towards purchasing guitars for use in art therapy sessions, where people can now express their emotions through song writing and performing.

Donations have enabled Franklyn Hospital, a hospital for older people with mental health needs, to provide a range of activities, including museum visits, print work sessions and live music performances.

Money raised also contributes to supporting research in the field of mental health and learning disability and supporting pioneering services – by identifying and contributing to innovative clinical projects, not currently funded by the NHS.

Our charity also supports a local group Little Bluebells, which provides a comfort zone to mums who are experiencing feelings of sadness, panic, loneliness, frustration, irritation or anger as a result of antenatal or postnatal depression and anxiety. The hope is that by meeting together with other mums in a similar situation and having some valuable ‘me time’, the women can begin to feel more positive about life as a mum and realise they are not alone in feeling the way they do.

Quotes from some of our beneficiaries…

Charitable Funds enable our services to go that little further and provide the extras the NHS is unable to fund. This includes a sensory garden at the Beech Unit in Torbay. One patient said, “I love the new garden, it smells amazing and brings me closer to nature. I particularly enjoy watering the plants and seeing the flowers grow.”

Lewis Powell, Ward Manager at Beech Unit, said, “The charity enabled us to transform an area normally unused in to a sensory environment that provides a welcome release to staff and patients. The recreational space is a beautiful place to engage with one another, catch the sun and take a break from the hospital setting.”

Carrie Clarke, an Occupational Therapist at Franklyn Hospital in Exeter, said “Charitable Funds are so important because they allow us to offer unique experiences, which enrich lives and enable our patients to express themselves in ways that are important to them.”

Richard Wellington, Technical Instructor at New Leaf said, “Charitable Funds have had a positive impact on the vocational services we provide to help people to get back into the work place. Having access to these funds means that we are able go that extra mile and provide facilities otherwise unavailable to our service.”

Secretary Melanie Joslin said, “Access to the charitable funds was a fantastic opportunity for us to be able to improve the experience for the residents on our ward. Part of the work we do on Russell Clinic is to re-equip people with lost skills and gain new ones. Having the barbecues adds a different dimension to the usual cooking skills we teach and we have seen people who are not usually interested in social gatherings or cooking, join in. They will therefore be beneficial to all residents coming through Russell for years to come. We also hope to use them for many events in the future including fundraising for Charitable Funds.”
