“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” – Helen Keller
Karen Griffiths now Chief Executive of Lindsey Lodge is also a qualified nurse and midwife. She talks about her career and the woman who inspired her to go further: “I have had a very long and privileged career working full time in the NHS for 36 years and undertook both nursing and midwifery training. I was very fortunate to take up my first managerial position with a very strong leader who was extremely supportive and motivating. I admired her strength and fairness as a leader and my time working with her inspired me to continue to pursue leadership positions. I have never forgotten her influence on my career, it was a very happy time.”
Asked what advice she could offer to women wanting to follow in her footsteps, she says “never want to stop learning and be reflective of your actions in order that you can grow from your experiences and your mistakes. I think it’s important to have insight into your own strengths and weaknesses and that you try to adjust and modify your styles and behaviours from your experiences.”
She joined Lindsey Lodge in 2016, taking over from Alison Tindall who established and oversaw the hospice for nearly 30 years. Karen arrived at a key milestone for the hospice celebrating its 25th birthday the following year. “I was particularly proud to lead our 25th Birthday celebrations in the summer of 2017, in which we hosted a birthday party held in the hospice gardens. Both patients, families, volunteers and past/ present staff and trustees were invited. We had over 100 people join us on a sunny afternoon and we all enjoyed an afternoon tea prepared by our excellent catering staff. It was particularly satisfying to reflect on the journey of the hospice over the years and to be reminded of key achievements that staff and volunteers fondly recalled. I was very proud to stand up as the current leader to talk about the next chapter for the hospice and share strategic thinking supported by our current staff and volunteers.”
